Proud to be an american?

Well honestly I am, but I have a few (no not a few LOTS) of problems with the the way thing are going, it very much makes me ashamed at times to call myself an American.

Im not going to pretend that I really know what I am talking about here (hey Im only an american) but I very much agree with these guys. Be sure you look at the pages they link... lots of disturbing facts in there about the realID act.

I really dont like the fact that it got pushed into another bill just so it would pass, that is not right, that is not what this contry is supposed to be about. We tell the entire world that the way wy do things is the shit, but in reality it is just shitty.

I am going to butcher a quote from a Lewis Black comedy routine...

"The problem with the United States is we go around telling everybody every day that we are the greatest country on earth. Emagine a person that came into work every morning and cried out 'I am the greatest fucker here!!! Without me all of you would be worthless!!' By the third day you would have killed him"

I'm not sure I understand the law they snuck by. I don't have time/desire to read all the material on it. Can someone sum it up for me?

The real ID Act that would require a National ID card for all Citizens.

It got pushed through (hush hush) because the taped it to the back of the emergency spending bill for the military that was almost guaranteed; to pass. That means that almost no debade or public discussion will go on about this VERY contriversial provision. there are some clauses that give the Secritary of DHS (department of homeland security) full control and sole discression about waiving ANY law that that is in the way of protecting our borders and the ability to block judicial review of any law that has been waived. a qoute form one of the linked sites "As the present bill stands, if DHS built a road through an endangered wetland and committed four murders in the process, nobody could take the government to court over it."

Hmm, I'm not seeing an issue with the ID card aside from sheer inconvenience, but I may not completely understand the entire scope of it. On the other hand, the whole HLS thing is atrocious. History should show that any loophole/law that can be exploited for ill purposes, will be. It's inevitable. Genocide would be legal as long as they were all suspected terrorists?

I see your point stan, but I just feel that the directon that this country is going is backwards... I am a pretty optomistic person and believe that the worls should operate as one place, not a bunch of seperate counties that make sure that you are of this or that country before you can experiance the culture and society of any place. THese ID cards I think just is another step in closing things down, the border should not be closed, they should be open to all, and all differnet cultures and Ideas...

There is a problem with "undocumented" people in this country, but the problem is not with them it is with us! THere should be a lot easier way for anyone in search of a different (better?) way of living to come into this country LEGALLY and work, but we have closed ourselfves off so much that it is not possible. It they were here working LEGALLY they would not be the "drain" on the economy that alot of people think they are, and would actually be helping.

Dont take much of this too seroiusly... I really dont know what I am talking about, this is just how I feel things are at the moment.

A "National ID"? Isn't that called a PASSPORT! the "real" issue here is why must we have a national id? Well i seems the current Congress and Executive believes that they should be able to instate any policy that they want. But oh, wait there is this third branch of government called the Judicial branch that is operating as it was designed in the US Constitution, As a Check to prevent a small majority from doing as it wants. So first, we have the So called "Nuclear Option" which for the first time in history prevents a fillabuster vote on judicial nominations. Now we have a law that superseeds state laws (which are also governed in part by the state judiciary) with a national ID and gives the power of some appointed official, someone not even elected, to bypass a judicial check. Wait just on fuckin second! I think we all need to take these types of things very seriously before we live in a country with closed borders (which BTW prevents americans from freely traveling to other countries) and limited personal freedoms... I just find it unacceptable that the same people who claim to be fighting for democracy abroad are the same people who are subvering democracy at home.

I agree Brendan, I dont know if the passport couns as I would say that less that 24% of americans have one (I would hate to think anyone ever actually left the country)

We seem to be losing all of the checks that keep things in balance (Wait... wait... Im getting a middle school goverment class flashback... CHECKS and BALANCES!! Wow wasnt that the thing thay made out government great?) I guess our current polititians didnt go to the same school I did...
