The River Runs Wild

I just got back from taking some pictures at the Animas river. I have never seen it this big before! Currently it is @ 7,870 CFS, it peaked @ 8000 today and is expected to hit 9000 soon. By the way the mean flow for May 25 is 2,746.

First up the Animas La Plata Project (ALP.) Notice that the water is now up and over their first barrier and has filled that whole section. Better hope that concrete for the dam is dry...

Here was a random shot... I was taking a picture of the raft and had pushed the button to take the picture when this guy in a jeep decided he was going to drive through the river! I moved to catch it and because my camera is old and takes a long time to snap after you push the button, I got lucky and got them both!

Check out all the people out to watch the Kayakers.

The waves are twice as tall as the raft!

This is what used to be the Smelter hole... Too much water now. When it is lower you can walk out about 10ft on those rocks you can barely see in the foreground.

Remember the bridge that the boats have to duck under I mentioned in a previous post? Here it is with a kayaker underneath it.

I also got some videos of some of the kayakers.

This guy is practicing some gate maneuvers.

Watch this guy surf the wave, he is good!

*UPDATE*

JD Just sent me a picture he took of the upper valley. You can see where the river is supposed to be but now it is just everywhere!

That bridge picture is crazy. There's one on a creek near my house that almost gets washed down stream every time it rains hard. Good thing no one Kayaks on that creek.

Not sure I understand the videos though. Wasn't he supposed to go through the gates, not around them? And I've never seen the surfing thing before so I should probably be impressed, but it's over my head. I think I just don't understand the sport of kayaking.

In competative Kayaking there are 2 types of gates. One (red normally) you go down through, the other (green) you have to go around and go upstream through it.
