What am I doing?

I dont know.

I havent posted much because I have been sitting here wondering what the hell I am going to do with my life.

I dont know.

I do have an Idea though. it has been floating around in my head for a few days. Sometimes I think it is the greatest Idea ever, and sometimes not so much. Anyway I decided to put my Idea on here and see what kind of reaction I get from a larger audience.

Here it is:

Larakin Systems: Technology Advisors (Or consultant, but that sounds to buisness like I think)

What I want to do is work with all the people out there that want to be using all of this modern technology, but arent quite sure how to take full advantage of it. How many people have you met that have thier new fancy digital camera but still take it to Walmart to get prints made and thats it? What is the point of having that camera now. I want to show you haw to take full advantage of all the featurs a digital camer can offer. Ill show you how to get the images on you computer in an easy way, how you share them with friends, how to fix them up the way you want, how to print the ones you want by yourself.

How many people bought a new MP3 player and dont know how to use it? Youve got 20GB of space on the thing but youve got one album you bought from iTunes on it? Ill show you how to rip all yur CD's, the formats to use and what so that down the road when/ if you get a new device it will all be compatable. How about your cell phone, you know it has a camera built in, but how do you get the pictures off the camera? Ill show you. What is a Text message and why am I paying $5.99 a month for it because the salesman said I needed it? Your new $5000 HDTV, how do you know you are using it to full potential? Something like 60% of HDTVs are not running in HD. What about that BestBuy tech that installed your TV but used a composite cable to hook it up? What the hell is a composite cable and why is that wrong? Ill tell you, Ill make sure you are taking full advantage of your stuff.

If its digital I can do it.

What do you think? Suggestions, comments, what the hell are you thinking? Let me know.

Thanks

UPDATE: Litereally as I was posting this I opened another Tab in Firefox to digg.com this was the first story on the fron page Complexity causes 50% of product returns

Your idea has good and bad parts. First the bads, it may be tough to get enough customers to support your lifestyle, especially in a rural area like you live in. And would people be willing to part with money to learn to use their tech when they could just ask a family member or a friend for help? How would you get your name out there to establish a clientelle(SP)? Not trying to be negative, just realistic.

Now the goods, there are a ton of people who don't have a clue what they're doing with tech. Heck, I'm only 50% sure what I'm doing. I've spent countless hours helping family/friends with tech stuff so there's a market out there. In a career, you definitely need to play to your strengths and your strengths are tech. The non-tech savy are typically the older people who now have a larger expendable income.

Overall, I think it's worth a shot, but you need to be smart and careful and above all, realistic.

I think it's a great idea. Edo actually did this for a little while before he started his current job. It wasn't very lucrative, but then again, he was also the world's worst self-promoter. He just got his clients by word of mouth.

I think if you are going to make any kind of money from this, you'll need a few small business clients in addition to regular people. Small "Mom and Pop" type places are prime candidates because while they don't really need full time in-house IT support, they do need more than just the guy on the phone from India.

Anyway, good luck with this idea. Keep us posted!

Stan, your point has been high on my mind from the beginning. But I think that I can avoid that because this is jut a little town. I have alot of contacts already that will spout my name any time anythning techincal comes up.

Wich leads me to Kates point. That is where a good portion of the word of mouth will come from I already have 2 or 3 Mom and Pop shops that I have been doing work for, for about 5 years now. One of them already says they are willing to begin paying for my service and also pass out buisness cards for me. My other friend has already offered to give me the names of all the other Small business owners that he thinks could use my service. I hope to beging "Hitting the pavement" on that next week.
